From ISO 8 to ISO 4, and what changes along the way

The Clean Room category covers machines that are allowed to stand inside the classified area. That places demands on three things at once: what the machine exhausts, what it is made of, and how it can be cleaned.

ULPA is not simply a better HEPA

From ISO class 5 upwards a ULPA filtered vacuum is required. ULPA U15 to EN 1822-1:2019 differs from HEPA on one point that matters in practice: the standard mandates a scan test using the PAO or DOP method to verify the integrity of the individual filter. The oil thread test permitted for H13 and H14 is not acceptable for U15. That is the difference between a filter tested as a type and a filter tested as a unit.

The ISO class says nothing about hazard

This is the most common misunderstanding in the category. ISO 14644-1 classifies the room by the number of particles per cubic metre. It says nothing about how hazardous those particles are. A machine suitable for ISO 4 is therefore not automatically suitable for OEB 4, unless the compound requires it as well. If you are handling highly potent compounds, OEB Facilities is the category to look in.

Material and cleanability

The machines are stainless steel, autoclavable and ESD safe. EU GMP Annex 1 from 2022 tightened the requirements for cleaning and disinfection in sterile environments and introduced the Contamination Control Strategy. The choice of cleaning equipment feeds directly into that strategy. Equipment must be cleanable to a validated end point, not merely wiped down.
