OEB Facilities

Containment solutions for OEB 3–5 and highly potent APIs. BIBO filtration, WIP-compatible machines and closed systems that protect the operator from exposure during cleaning and filter changes.

The OEB system is industry standard — not legislation. There is no authority controlling whether your exposure control is adequate. Contact us for advisory on the right containment level for your substances. Read the article →

Containment at OEB 3, 4 and 5

OEB stands for Occupational Exposure Band and groups compounds by health hazard into bands 1 to 5. OEB 1 is the least hazardous, above 1,000 µg/m³. OEB 5 calls for fully closed systems and isolators, below 0.1 µg/m³. The system is not legislation. It is an assessment tool the industry built for the many compounds that have no official exposure limit.

The difference between BIBO and BO

BIBO, or Bag-In/Bag-Out, means the filter is sealed inside a bag both when it is removed and when it is fitted. It is mandatory at OEB 4 and 5 and when handling highly potent compounds. A BO system seals only on removal and is used at OEB 3 and 4, where the risk assessment shows BIBO to be more than the situation calls for. The choice is not a question of price but of what the risk assessment can support.

The material changes at OEB 4

AISI 304 stainless steel is sufficient at OEB 3. From OEB 4, AISI 316L is the industry standard for contact surfaces. Lower carbon content and added molybdenum give resistance to the acids, alkalis and chlorine bearing agents that decontamination requires. Electropolishing to a surface roughness of Ra 0.6 to 0.4 µm is the typical requirement at these levels, because a smoother surface is faster to clean to a demonstrable end point.

The motor matters

Carbon brushes in a conventional motor shed carbon particles during operation. In an OEB 3 to 5 environment those particles mix with the collected material and call for an additional filter to keep them out of the room air. Brushless motors remove the problem at source.

Documenting containment

SMEPAC is the only widely recognised method for measuring the actual containment performance of a system under realistic operating conditions. It is requested in OQ protocols and during regulatory inspection. Ask for it as a matter of course, including when the supplier does not offer it.

We help match the machine to the OEB level, including the choice between BO and BIBO. contact us.
